How is The Art of Teaching different from a Yoga teacher training?

Most Yoga teacher training courses focus on content and technique of practice. Few, however, expound on the process and technique of teaching that is, the delivery.  This course is about learning how to effectively teach and apply content (from whatever method or style) within a complex and dynamic teaching environment.

Here's your chance to freely experience this type of teaching as a student.

If you have ever completed a Yoga teacher training program that was heavy on content and light on delivery, this course is for you.  If you’ve been teaching for decades but want to reignite your passion for teaching and reorient towards shared-inquiry teaching, this course will provide you with new skills.  If you are considering a career as a Yoga teacher and want to commit to an approach to teaching that is about empowerment of your students, this course is an excellent foundation.

This course is suitable for any Yoga teacher interested in adopting a shared-inquiry approach to teaching that restores the self-agency of his or her students.  Teachers from all methods, styles and traditions have attended Donna’s The Art of Teaching online course, and her residential 21-day teacher training.

Class #1 From Inertia to Energy: When You Can’t Get Off the Floor

(Duration=135 minutes)

Chronic busyness can leave us feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.  Often these feelings are hidden: suppressed and supplanted by the grinding need to be perpetually productive. This physical lethargy may also be accompanied by feelings of sadness, depression and anxiety.
In this clinic, Donna Farhi shares strategies for accepting where we are and using this as a stepping stone to gently lure ourselves out of inertia. Instead of abandoning practice altogether, we can relish the soothing support of the ground and how the body is wisely attempting to downshift into the parasympathetic nervous system to build new resources. Our time on the floor will focus on increasing circulation and vitality through gradually freeing up tension in the neck, shoulders and spine. We’ll utilize gentle asanas, spinal oscillation and twists, as well as longer stays in supported Restorative postures, completing our time together with the profoundly relaxing practice of Yoga Nidra.

Recommended props for this class: • A mat • 3 blankets • A bolster • 1 x strap • 2 x brick blocks • 1 x MR ball, gertie ball, or exer-soft ball • 1 x towel roll • A chair • Access to a wall  • Whatever you need to be comfortable in sitting meditation

Class #2 Back Bending with Ease: Developmental Support (Part One) (Duration=136 minutes)

To maintain a graceful posture throughout our lives we need to do a little extension every day to counter the tendency of the spine to progressively become more rounded or kyphotic. While a little spinal extension is good, deep and repetitive back bending can compromise the integrity of the spine. What we do need is regular, gentle and easeful extension that maintains the fluid uprightness of the spine and keeps the spine strong for sitting, standing and moving. In this workshop, we’ll explore the underlying support of a human developmental movement pattern in creating ease during spinal extension. Donna would like to assure all participants that she has limited extension of her spine and is more interested in helping you learn how to safely and enjoyably extend your back than in entertaining (or injuring you) with extreme back bending postures. You will come away from this clinic with invaluable tools for both correcting imbalances of the spine and improving postural alignment. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Class #3 Back Bending with Ease: Structural Support (Part Two)

(Duration=133 minutes)

Our culture conditions us to believe that as we age we begin an inevitable decline towards a rounded and compressed spine. This decline, however,  is neither inevitable or desirable and there are many accessible practices we can implement in our yoga routine to maintain youthful elasticity.  Even those who come to yoga late in life can vastly improve the fluidity, strength, and verticality of their bodily experience. In this workshop, Donna will work with you to strengthen structurally weak and vulnerable areas of the spine, while targeting those areas of the back that can tend towards rigidity and immobility. We’ll move through a well-rounded practice that you can integrate into your weekly routine, as well as mini-practices that you can incorporate into daily life to reduce the effects of long hours of sitting. Slouch no more! Restore your body’s capacity to self-support and sustain effortless verticality.

Class #4 with Donna: The Lateral Line

(Duration=100 minutes)

When we activate and release the deep intervertebral muscles of the spine we restore the capacity of the back to move fluidly.  Rediscovering the side-to-side wavelike motions of the spine comes through playful exploration as these are movements that may have become extinct in our everyday activities.  In this class we will also investigate how one-sided discomfort and pain in the lower back can often be ameliorated through gentle movements that target and retrain lateral asymmetries.  This can be especially valuable for those with spinal scoliosis.  As we open up lateral movement potential we also expand the patterning of consciousness from having blinders on to seeing and experiencing the world around us through an expanded orientation.

Class #5 with Donna: Core Steadiness

(Duration = 94 minutes)

Yoga Sutra III:29: “Concentrated attention on the primordial navel center brings understanding of all bodily systems.”

In both Western and Eastern traditions the center of gravity within the pelvis is considered the calibrating keystone for organizing the entire body.  Sometimes referred to as the hara, dantien or the deep navel center, refining the position of the navel center gives us the ability to both release and contain the energy that moves through the pelvis.  Having a strong yet mobile core not only has a powerful physical effect, it also affects us energetically, emotionally, and spiritually. A particular emphasis of this class will be using the practice of yama or “restraint” as a way of bringing our fullest attention to stability within both the body and mind. Stability is then used as the prerequisite condition from which to expand and a stable reference point to which we can return.  The mindful practice of yama serves to develop a sense of calmness in the nervous system and steadiness of the mind and heart.

Recommended props for this class:
• A mat • 3 blankets • A bolster • 1 x strap • 2 x brick blocks • 1 x MR ball, gertie ball, or exer-soft ball • 1 x towel roll • A chair • Access to a wall •
2 tennis balls or something of a similar size and weight such as 2 lemons, or 2 oranges or 2 apples! (Your chosen prop should be small enough to fit easily into your hand) • Whatever you need to be comfortable in sitting meditation
