Yoga is Not A One-Size-Fits-All Approach

Yoga methodologies that are based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach do not take into account the individual nature of human anatomy. Over thirty years ago when I began my own formal Yoga studies, this rigid approach to practice only made my hyperlordotic back worse*.   I gradually abandoned the lineage I’d been following and started to tailor fit my Yoga practice to meet my own needs.  This was the beginning of my fascination with the psoas and in-depth studies of anatomy.
Over the ensuing decades I’ve noticed that many of the people coming to my intensives have problems caused by hypermobility rather than lack of flexibility.  Many are Yoga teachers who have literally pulled their bodies apart with Yoga and are now seeking a solution to chronic debilitating pain.  Today as I teach around the world the problem has multiplied.  We now have a global epidemic of instability and reoccurring injuries from over-stretching and repetitive practice of extreme postures.

* Hyperlordosis is an accentuation of the lumbar curvature.
Knowledge is Power

Together with co-author Leila Stuart we've put together the definitive guide to working with the psoas.  These practices have been tested in my own practice and with hundreds of students worldwide.

The result is Pathways to a Centered Body– Gentle Yoga Therapy for Core Stability, Healing Back Pain, and Moving with Ease.

Inside this Book You'll Find...
  • A step-by-step proven protocol that in some cases gives rapid relief from persistent pain.
  • Easy to follow practice sequences including two for relieving back pain that can sooth and release the psoas and spinal tension in 30 minutes.
  • Over 20 core specific poses and practices with clear colour photographs, including the benefits, contraindications and equipment needed with therapeutic variations offered for those with limited movement.
  • An experiential anatomy guide so you can find, soften, hydrate, balance and learn to strengthen and move from your core body.
  • Grow your anatomical knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of how the core muscles work so you can practice confidently and safely.

The Pathways Book

Donna Farhi, renowned Yoga teacher and author, together with Leila Stuart, created the definitive guide, "Pathways To A Centered Body: Gentle Yoga Therapy For Core Stability, Healing Back Pain, and Moving With Ease". In this book, Donna and Leila share their incredibly effective approach to balancing body structure for optimal, pain-free movement.

They demystify the phrase “core fitness”, guiding you through centering your pelvis and finding optimal spinal alignment as the foundation for true core strength and stability. In easily understandable terms, the authors shed light on the function of the deepest core muscles, the psoas, as an extraordinary unifying structure for the entire body.

You'll find a step-by-step protocol on how to release, balance, and engage your core muscles. You'll learn how to improve flexibility in Yoga practices safely, without compromising pelvic and spinal stability. As deeply held tension is resolved, this work will aid you in feeling more grounded, mentally focused, and emotionally calm.

The book is an essential guide for Yoga and Pilates students and teachers, dancers, athletes, physical therapists, chiropractors, somatic practitioners, and indeed anyone wanting to live in their body with greater ease.
The book normally retails for $29.99 at Barnes and Noble and other great bookstores, but until midnight on the 5th July it is only $19.79 with Free Shipping as a bonus.

Fifteen Years of Strong Asana Practice Left Me In A Lot of Pain

If you want to go deeper into your understanding of how your body works, to find blind spots and start working with the core buy this book! I now approach my personal Asana practice and teaching with much more confidence. Several long-standing issues in my body have been addressed and improved.

Fifteen years of strong Asana practice left me in a lot of pain (sacroiliac joints, lumbar, dorsal, meniscus and cervical spine).  My science background led me to look outside my lineage for answers.  I return again and again to this book, re-read and re-experiment. Now the core is central to my work. My favourite new insight is that “Mobility of the periphery depends on the stability of the core”. It is NOT strong abdominals that give stability, but the sense of the central cylinder.

I now understand my own imbalances (scoliosis, QL, psoas) and have found new ways to balance them. Daily, I can help my students find new ways to move with ease, some of these students have been with me for a decade.

Rethinking One of Yoga’s Most Misunderstood Concepts, The “Core.”

This beautifully and succinctly written book will change the way we think about Yoga practice. The authors present a sound anatomical case for rethinking one of Yoga’s most misunderstood concepts, the “core.” They provide common sense practices to engage, stabilize, and integrate the core to create a ground for sensible and graceful movement. Simultaneously radical and down-to-earth, Pathways to a Centered Body will help readers create a sustainable Yoga practice—both on and off the mat

An Exquisite and Important Book

Pathways to a Centered Body is an exquisite and important book. The writing, photographs and illustrations are lucid, accessible and gorgeous. Donna’s ability to weave together objective, scientific data with living, breathing, first person experience is unusual and extremely satisfying. I felt addressed at every level – physical, energetic, mental/emotional, intellectual and spiritual – and I felt respected and cared for as the reader. Donna offers us a detailed map and guides us gently and with consummate skill through the vast terrain of our own experience, taking us home to our true center. As a Yoga practitioner and teacher I refer to this book often, rereading particular passages, practicing appropriate sequences and being inspired by the embodied wisdom that is reflected in these pages. I’ve never had the privilege of studying with Donna in person so I am especially grateful to have this book as a vehicle to learn from a compassionate, wise master.
