The Art of Teaching is fundamentally very different from many of the yoga teacher trainings that are out there in the world right now and the main difference is the strategy or the model for teaching, or what I call the pedagogic model.
The focus of everything we do in this course is about restoring the students’ self agency. It is about restoring the student’s ability to find an inner reference point and to trust it and to use their own perception to make decisions about their choice of practice, how long they stay in a practice, and how deeply they might go in a practice and when they’re done with the practice as well. We bring these decisions back into the agency of the student.
And one of the most profound things about this particular model is that it makes the group class experience so much safer because every individual in the group is taking care of their own experience, with the teachers’ help no doubt. But each and every student is given explicit permission to honor their own perception and adapt practices accordingly.
After many years of offering 21-day residential yoga teacher trainings, many of the people who graduated from those trainings told me that they wanted a more advanced training. They wanted something that could help them implement all the content they had learned.
So the reason I’ve put this course together now is that I feel that there are teachers all over the world who have immense content in their teaching but not necessarily the skills to implement the delivery of that content in a way that makes for a satisfying experience for them as a teacher and an engaging learning experience for the students.
I’m calling this course The Art of Teaching because while there are techniques and very practical things we can do in our teaching to be competent teachers I feel that there is always the potential that we can elevate teaching to an art form so that the people that we’re engaged with might experience yoga in the same way that they might experience the elevation you feel inside yourself when listening to beautiful music or seeing an inspiring painting or reading a poem that resonates well with you.
