Offer up every joy,
be awake at all moments to the news
that is always arriving
out of silence.

Theme: Overshadowing: A Shift in Mental Focus
Physical Focus: Balance postures, Sun Salutation and Standing Postures
What’s Inside: By focusing the mind on a challenging task, we can “overshadow” anxiety and other negative emotions, returning the body/mind to a state of calmness. This class includes many simple balancing postures, either practiced individually or as part of an integrated Sun Salutation/Standing posture flow sequence. Donna introduces the “Split Stance Balance” to switch on the motor control required to balance on one foot and stabilize through the supporting leg. This is a physically enervating practice that leads to a mental and emotional sense of stability and calmness.
Key Focus: The motor control required to maintain balance is an integral part of our walking gait and our ability to move safely and confidently over uneven terrain. By incorporating postures that require balance, both static and in motion, we are improving motor control, strength and coordination. Because balancing is a demanding task, it requires mental focus. We also explore the way in which a slight increase in the pacing of a practice with shorter stays in each movement, can facilitate focused attention.
